Joe Zhang enabled us to have an unforgettable time on the Great Wall. We were picked up at our hotel in the hutong by Joe and his driver, Fung. From there we were driven approx 70 kilometres to a village called Xizhazi. We then hiked through the forested trail to the section of wall that has not been renovated yet ( Jiankou) and then walked at a leisurely pace until we joined up with the rebuilt section of wall at Mutianyu. Joe was extremely cordial and informative, not only regarding the history of the wall but also eager to answer any other question we had about Chinese customs and culture. We would gladly recommend Joe as a guide and interpreter to anyone who wishes to experience the Great Wall and it appears he can guide people o one to ten day camping trips along the Wall as well.
The Routes of One-Day Hikes

Difficulty
This section of Great Wall locates right north of Beijing about 120km. The color of the wall here is white and grey because the material that is used to build the wall here is limestone and bricks. I often liken Jiankou Great Wall to a white dragon with vicissitudes. Jiankou Great Wall is very famous in Beijing because it is kind of off-beaten-path, compared with crowded Badaling section and Mutianyu section, it is very quiet.
Buddha Head , Eagle Flies Upward, Beijing Knot and Nine-Eye Tower are well-known here.
The hike on Jiankou section is quite hard especially for people who are afraid of high because some of the stairs here are very steep, which looks like heaven's ladder but the view is stunning, you feel like being surrounded by pyramids because the watch towers are all built on the top of cliffs make them look like pyramids.
The hike here will take about 3 hours depends on paces.

Gubeikou to Jinshanling
Gubeikou Great Wall in old days is very strategically important because the valley blocked by this section of the Great Wall is the north gateway of the capital. In order to make sure the capital is safe, the emperor invested a lot of money to make the Great Wall here strong enough.
The general at that moment mainly used bricks to build this section of the Great Wall, because the color of the bricks are brown so the color of the Great Wall here is also brown and this is the reason why people prefer to come here for sunrise and sunset!
The view here is very nice, the distance of the Great Wall you can see here is about 30km, the Great Wall looks like a dragon zigzags on the ridges of mountains and there are so many towers here. The speciality here is the character bricks. The hike here is pretty hard especially in summer time because there is a military forbidden area here so we need to walk through the jungle part of the hike, in summer time there are quite a lot of flies and bugs, bug spray is very necessary. The hike here need about 3 to 4 hours.

Huanghuacheng Great Wall(has been substituted by another segment due to regulation)
Huanghuacheng Great Wall has another name, and it is also called Water Great Wall. The reason why people named it Water Great Wall is that the Huanghuacheng Great Wall is cut by two rivers. Firstly the Great Wall snaking into water, then come out, keep snaking to west about 4-5 km, then meet another river, the Great Wall plunges into the water again here and then climb up to mountain ridge. Huanghuacheng Great Wall is the only section of the Great Wall where you can enjoy the view of Great Wall, mountains and water all these things together! The water and breeze here makes people refreshed and calm
The hike here is quite hard. The slope here is steep. It mixes with old and new you will feel the contrast between them. It takes 3-4 hours.

Sample Great Wall
People said before the solders built the formal Great Wall, the General ordered to build a sample of the Great Wall to show the solders the standard they need to follow when they build the formal wall to make sure the quality of the Great Wall are good. This is the reason why the Great Wall here named Sample Great Wall.
The view here is so nice especially in fall when the crabapple are red, and this place is so remote when you walk through the village here you will see the life here is so primitive and peaceful. The mountains here run consecutively, the view is so imposing!

Horn Mountain Great Wall
This section of Great Wall is very close to the east beginning of Great Wall. The altitude of the top of Horn Mountain is about 500 meters above sea level, you may think it is not very steep but the real thing is this mountain start from 0 meter from sea level climbs up to 500 meter above sea level suddenly so it is very tough to climb.
On sunny days, when you climb up to the top of Horn Mountain Great Wall, you can see the ocean and the big pass named the First Pass under Heaven, it is so beautiful.
The hike here takes long time about 4 hours.
